Most houses now have more than one
computer, by the time you add a printer and laptop there is a clear
need for a network to share files, printers and Internet
connections.
An emerging use for smart wiring is the provision of AV content
to remote rooms via a system of central media server and thin
client in the remote room.
For example Microsoft Media Centre Edition operating system on a
central PC or perhaps a NAS drive storing all the families music,
pictures and movies, with a thin client in the remote room such as
the Microsoft XBOX360.
This enables content stored on the central server to be routed
to any required destination using TCPIP running over an Ethernet
connection provided by the CAT6 section of the smart wiring
structure.
